Introducing: Joan Moriarty, Life Share Coordinator

profile-of-JoanHi I’m Joan. I have been with Community Living for 16 years so far. And I love my job!

I had been in Human Services since 1991 when I went back to school to get my DSW (Developmental Service Worker) diploma at Algonquin College. I was able to obtain a relief position at Community Living after my first semester, so was gaining my hours while studying in the field. From day one I knew I had chosen the right career path.

I have always been a person with good common sense and the ability to deal with a crisis, so I am able to adapt to many different situations without much difficulty. I get easily bored with routine, so I have lots of experiences with challenging behaviours as they are like a box of chocolates. You never know what your going to get.

Within the Human Services, I have worked with three agencies including Community Living Trent Highlands, and each has had its own challenges.

Working in the Life Share Program (Family Home) is my most favourite position that I have held. When I started, we were supporting only about 25 people in the program. We now have over 100 people served and counting. Most have come through the Transitional Age Program, former crown wards from various Children’s Services. They come with their own issues that are far more reaching than previous years, and many came from aging parents that were unable to care for them.

I have studied and obtained a Certificate for FASD and Conflict Resolution from a Trillium Grant from FASD Peterborough. I am constantly trying to be up to date with any workshops with regards to FASD and Attachment Disorders.

Did I mention that I love my job!?
