A Feel Good Story of Reconnection and Family Bonding

Holly joined the Life Share Program when she turned eighteen. She lived with her initial family for three years before joining her current family, with whom she has lived with for the past twenty-four years. Read on to hear about a beautiful story of reconnection.

Holly was born in Inverness Cape Breton. She lived with her biological family until she was two. At the time, Holly had two older sisters and a younger brother. Holly moved in with the Killen family at age of three. When Holly was around five years old, her older sister Cindy joined the Killen family. The Killen family adopted both Holly and Cindy.

Holly and Cindy continued to live with the Killens in Cape Breton for a few years before they all moved to Oshawa. When Cindy turned sixteen, she left home to return to Cape Breton. Unfortunately, Holly and Cindy lost contact for over thirty-two years.

Holly’s oldest sister, Lori, has always lived in Nova Scotia started reaching out to Holly via Facebook. It took several years for Holly to feel comfortable to have any connection with her biological family. About two years ago, Holly made the decision that she would like to get to know her sisters better. Holly reached out to Lori, who put Holly in contact with her Cindy. Lori, Holly, and Cindy would have monthly, sometimes weekly, FaceTime conversations. It was very heartwarming hearing Holly connect with her sisters.

Holly and Cindy would spend hours on FaceTime, reminiscing of all their fun times spent together. Cindy helped Holly to get answers and pictures from their childhood. It was a wonderful opportunity for Holly to relate to her biological family.

Cindy currently lives in Mississippi in the United States. Cindy was planning to visit Halifax in June 2024 to connect with their biological family. Holly decided she would like to plan to go to Halifax to meet her sisters in person. Holly and Cindy put plans into motion for Holly to go on an extended long weekend to Halifax while Cindy would be there. Cindy introduced Holly to Thomas and Nigel, two of three brothers she had never met. Cindy helped Holly connect with her biological mother and brother John Paul by FaceTime. They continue to live in Cape Breton in the house where Holly was born. Holly loved hearing that her mother continues to celebrate Holly’s birthday every January 1st even though they have not seen each other in forty-five years.

Holly and Lori had a chance to meet and go for lunch together. She met her brother in-law for the first time. Holly and Lori look like twins. They both have red hair and blue eyes; however, they are four years apart in age. Six out of the seven siblings have red hair and blue eyes; Cindy has blue eyes but with dark hair. It is still easy to tell that Holly and Cindy are sisters.

Cindy and Holly had an amazing visit and are planning to get together again very soon. Holly would like her next trip to be Cape Breton so she can meet her biological mother in person.
